The Daymaniyat Islands are Oman's best-known marine reserve and one of the easiest places in the Gulf region to see coral reefs and sea turtles on a day trip. If you're staying in Muscat, they're closer than most people expect: a boat ride of about 45 minutes from Al Mouj Marina.

Where are the Daymaniyat Islands?
The Daymaniyat (also written Dimaniyat or Daymaniyat) Islands are an archipelago of nine islands lying roughly 16–18 km off the coast of Al Seeb and Barka, west of central Muscat. They are uninhabited, rocky and ringed by shallow, clear water, and they can only be reached by boat.
The islands and the sea around them form the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve, protected since 1996. That protection is the reason the reefs are in such good condition and why marine life is so easy to see.
Why visit?
- Coral reefs close to the surface. Much of the coral sits in a few metres of water, so you don't need to dive to see it — snorkelling is enough.
- Sea turtles. Green and hawksbill turtles feed around the reefs and nest on the islands' beaches. Seeing at least one on a snorkelling trip is common.
- Clear water and white sand. On a calm day the water is a bright turquoise and visibility can be excellent.
- Birdlife. The islands are an important nesting site for seabirds, including ospreys.
- It's easy. You can leave Muscat in the morning, spend the day on the water and be back in the afternoon.
Getting there from Muscat
All of our trips depart from Al Mouj Marina (formerly The Wave), about 15 minutes from Muscat International Airport. The crossing to the islands takes about 45 minutes, depending on the sea.
Plan to arrive 15 minutes before departure so there's time to check in, get fitted for snorkelling gear and hear the safety briefing.
What can you do there?
Snorkelling is the main event. Your captain chooses spots according to the day's current and visibility, and the crew will help beginners get comfortable in the water. Read our snorkelling guide for what to expect.
Kayaking and paddle boarding are a relaxed way to explore the shallows between swims (included on selected trips).
Beach time. Where landing is permitted, there's time to relax on the sand. Access rules are set by Oman's environmental authorities and can change during nesting seasons — the crew will always tell you where you can go ashore.

Reserve rules worth knowing
Because the islands are a protected reserve, a few rules apply to every visitor:
- Don't touch, stand on or collect coral, shells or sand.
- Don't feed fish or chase turtles — give wildlife space.
- Take all rubbish back with you.
- Only land where the crew says it's allowed.
